Hard Currency

 

A freely tradable and deliverable currency such as Sterling or US Dollars.

 

Hard Disk

 

The core memory of your computer, which stores information, programs and software using magnetism (so don't drop your laptop!).

 

Hardware

 

The computer bits you can touch and see.  

 

Hedging

 

The process of mitigating a financial risk produced by the conduct of a business.

 

HFC

 

The cables under the streets in most of the UK. Using a special cable modem they provide very swift internet access (faster than ISDN) as well as multiple TV channels and telephone lines. Stands for hybrid fibre-optical/coaxial). Available from cable TV companies e.g. Telewest, ntl. 

 

Hire Purchase (HP)

 

A type of finance agreement which includes an option for you to buy the goods at the end of the hire period. It is also known as Lease Purchase.

 

Hits

 

The number of visits to a website. Often shown on a counter on the site.

 

Honour

 

To pay or accept a bill of exchange.

 

Hotlink

 

Links between documents, and, more commonly, internet sites.

HTML

 

The language in which all web pages are written. Sometimes you can get programs which allow you to write the page in Word or a similar program and then have it converted into HTML. HTML stands for HyperText Mark-up Language. 

 

HTTP

The language used by the internet when sending web pages to your browser. HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol.
