Card fraud is increasing every year. As a result, over £1.1million is lost by businesses every day in the UK. Chip and PIN is designed to help combat this. Instead of signing a paper receipt at the till, your customers will enter a four digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) using a special keypad terminal, (PIN pad).
It's time to crack down on card crime
In the 12 months to June 2004, card crime cost the UK £478m.
One in three people have been affected by card fraud and every year it puts thousands of jobs and businesses at risk
Card crime is predicted to reach £800 million in the next two years if nothing is done

Chip and PIN - how it works
Chip - The chip (or microchip) is usually gold or silver coloured and can be found embedded into the front left-hand side of a card. Chip technology has been proven to hinder and deter card crime as it makes it more difficult to copy or alter.
PIN - The PIN, a secret 4-digit number known only by the cardholder helps ensure the right person is using it. The PIN is checked by technology rather than interpreted by eye, and it can't be forged - unlike signatures.
Chip and PIN isn't just a UK scheme. Although the UK is one of the first countries to implement the new system, chip and PIN will also be adopted across Europe and eventually worldwide.
The system is proven. A domestic PIN system in France has seen an 80% reduction in card fraud since its introduction ten years ago.
