Cardholder information

*How will chip and PIN affect you?

  • The majority of UK customers who use cards when paying in person for goods and services will be issued with new chip and PIN cards by the end of 2005.
  • Most UK retail outlets and suppliers will be upgrading their systems to accept the new cards with many of the largest high street names having already done so.

HSBC customers need to take no action – we’ll do it for you

  • The majority of our customers will receive new chip and PIN credit and debit cards by the end of 2005. These will replace your existing cards. There is no need for you to contact us, we will replace your cards automatically. Until we get in touch with you, you can use your existing cards as normal.
  • The PIN you will need to punch into the retailer’s PIN pad when you make a purchase will be the same PIN you currently use at the cash machines. If you do not have a PIN for your debit card or if you have not used it recently, we will send you a reminder after your new chip and PIN card has been issued.
  • As fewer customers use PINs for credit cards, we will send all credit card customers details of the PINs for their credit cards.
  • Don’t forget that you can change your PIN at any HSBC cash machine throughout the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. See the demo

Please note - chip and PIN doesn't affect purchases made via the telephone, mail order or by internet.
