If you rent your card acceptance terminal from HSBC
Review your card acceptance terminal's current position. Will you need to reposition your new chip and PIN card acceptance terminal so that it is easier for customers to key in their PIN? Have you considered the position of your terminal so that it accommodates the needs of your disabled customers? Have you thought about the design and layout of your point of sale terminal so that it's not overlooked by your surveillance equipment?
If we have not replaced your terminal yet we will contact you shortly to upgrade it.We aim to provide the best terminal for your business needs. In most cases this will be either:
A PIN pad that can be plugged into your existing terminal (to protect your business from the impact of the liability shift)
Cardmate 2 terminal
Please follow the steps below so we can upgrade your terminal to process chip and PIN (Personal Identification Number) cards.
Step 1 Following the PIN Pad Upgrade Manual provided, please plug in the PIN pad. This must be installed before the upgrade of the software can start.
Step 2
To enable your terminal to accept chip and PIN cards, its software programme will be upgraded overnight. Please make sure your terminal is switched on and the PIN pad is attached. You don't need to be present during the upgrade. After the upgrade the PIN pad will display "Ready Insert Card" and your terminal will be ready to accept chip and PIN card transactions.
Step 3
The terminal and PIN pad should be positioned to accommodate the needs of your disabled customers.
When presented with a chip card insert it into the PIN pad chip reader and simply follow the prompts on the terminal and the instructions provided in the Upgrade Manual. Cards without a chip will continue to be processed by swiping the card through the magnetic stripe reader on the terminal.
Or a combined terminal and PIN pad (to protect your business from the impact of the liability shift)
We will arrange for the relevant software to be sent to your terminal via the telephone line.
Mobile and portable terminals
Under chip and PIN, instead of signing a paper receipt a cardholder will enter a PIN using a special keypad terminal. This means that the customer will need to go to the terminal or the terminal must go the customer and may cause you a problem if currently you print out a receipt and then take that receipt to your customer for signature.
Portable and mobile terminals:
A portable terminal - combines the functionality of a card processing terminal with a cordless phone. It is capable of operating away from direct power and communication lines, to a maximum distance and is ideally suited to restaurants.
A mobile terminal - combines the functionality of a card processing terminal with a mobile phone. It is capable of operating away from direct power and communication lines, and allows card payments to be taken in a face to face environment when located away from the business address.
